Process
THROWING
Choosing, wedging, and weighing the clay comes first.
Forming the pieces on the potter’s wheel, the inside of each piece is completed at this stage.
GREENWARE
Drying in a controlled atmosphere and watching for the right time to trim requires constant attention.
Trimming the pieces, I form the outside shape of each piece and make the foot.
They must be completely dried before firing, usually for a week.
BISQUEWARE
Bisque firing is a preparation firing before glaze (color) is applied.
Application of Glaze is the trickiest part of the process and where the most errors are made.
HIGH FIRE
High Firing to Cone 10 (around 2350 degrees) is the final and exciting step. They go either into a group firing or in a kiln that I fire on my own.
Each piece of mine was made by following this process. In addition, I must carefully pack and transport the very fragile greenware pieces from San Francisco where I live and have a home studio to Berkeley to The Potters’ Studio where I glaze and fire my work.
